ACT UP Meeting 7pm Mon, July 16, LGBT Center – Organizing for International AIDS Conference

ACT UP Meeting 7pm Monday, July 16, LGBT Center – Organizing for International AIDS Conference

Put AIDS Back in the Headline: Protest Tuesday, July 24 in DC

Dear Friends,

In the wake of the successful organizing for the Financial Transaction Tax (Robin Hood Tax) on April 25th, and the timely Pride March theme of HIV Criminalization we have the opportunity to take these projects and others to a much wider audience.

In late July tens-of-thousands will attend the International AIDS Conference in Washington DC. As is usually the case the media will swarm the conference for the latest news about the epidemic. ACT UP and other AIDS organizations will have an unparalleled opportunity to project our demands for Universal Access to AIDS medications, full funding for AIDS Care and elimination of HIV criminalization and stigma. This is part of our plan to inject AIDS into the presidential campaign.

Mobilization to End AIDS, Tuesday July 24, Washington DC

But to do so we must be organized. Join ACT UP every Monday until the AIDS conference*, at 7pm for an organizing meeting where we can plan our participation. Especially important is the mass day of action on Tuesday  July 24th as we mobilize what may be the largest AIDS demonstration in US history. We are planning on bringing buses to the conference. The demonstration will have 5 wings, all meeting at one point at the end of the march. At tonight’s meeting you’ll be able to sign up to come on the bus to Washington DC on Tuesday July 24th.

[THE FUNDRAISER UP HAS CLOSED]

To do this we need to raise money. Jim Hubbard has agreed to allow us to do a showing of United in Anger at the LGBT Center on Thursday July 12 as a fundraiser. The program starts at 6:30pm. Please come and support our efforts and tell your friends. Suggested donation is $10, no one will be turned away. We hope to make our buses free.

[THE SIGN UP HAS CLOSED]

For more information come to our meeting Monday, July 16, at 7pm at the LGBT Center 208 W. 13th St. in Manhattan.

We’ll discuss these items and more. Also a discussion of the case of James Plunkett, convicted of deadly assault in an HIV saliva case whose case was overturned by the NY Appeals Court, only to face re-sentencing Thursday, June 28 in Herkimer County Court House.

Best,

John Riley
