Don’t let Kate Barnhart go to jail!

ACT UP member Kate Barnhart needs your support! As one of 17 single-payer activists who sat-in at Aetna last fall.

Kate Barnhart has been targeted by the District Attorney’s office, which has re-filed criminal charges against her despite a judge’s dismissals of such charges in July.

We’ll all be wearing “Kate masks” (on sticks, not actual masks so as not to break the “mask law”) with dialogue-box-shaped signs saying “Only Guilty of Needing Health Care.”

What: Rally to support Kate Barnhart against re-filed criminal charges

When: Wed, 9/15, 9am

Where: outside of Manhattan Criminal Court, 100 Centre St (between Franklin and Leonard St in Lower Manhattan)

Dear Supporter of Medicare for All:

It’s time to stand with Kate Barnhart, the brave health activist who is unfairly targeted by the Manhattan District Attorney for her courageous actions against Aetna to demand they stop denying patients needed health care.

The judge hearing the case dismissed the charges against Kate on July 19th, 2010. But in August, the DA’s office re-filed charges against Kate, who is now scheduled to return to court on September 15th. The District Attorney’s office is targeting Kate because of a previous misdemeanor conviction for an anti-war action. The DA is targeting no other activists, including the 39 other activists who participated at insurance company sit-ins last Fall in New York City, some of whom also have prior convictions. Kate is truly being singled out.

We need everyone to stand with Kate. Join Kate and supporters on September 15th at 9am in front of the Manhattan Criminal Court at 100 Centre St in Lower Manhattan. Kate’s hearing will follow and people are encouraged to attend in support of Kate. We will be delivering over 1,200 signatures

On Kate’s behalf. There’s still time to sign and circulate No Available anymore

Let’s pack the courtroom with supporters and demand they stop the unfair treatment of a nonviolent activist when the real criminals, the health insurance companies, continue their egregious practices of denials of health care to premium-paying customers.
