ACT UP NY recognizes the revolutionary work by Dr Mary T. Bassett, both at the NYC DOHMH–which she transformed into a coalition builder organization and where employees were forbidden to talk with ACT UP –and at the NYS DOH, where she implanted Health Care as a Human Right, the first step to universal heath coverage in NY State.
Dr Bassett was the first to link HIV outcomes directly to racism, instead of focusing on consequences.
Since then, ACT UP and other organizations see the DOHMH as a partner… and, together we work better!
Dr Bassett leaves the NYS DOH to go back to Harvard University, to direct the FBX Center For Human Rights.
