U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable)
December 1, 2019: This world AIDS day, AIDS Activists from ACT UP New York passed out flyers with the U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable) ACT UP graphic and information that is often a surprise to many. It reads:
Card text:
U=U
Undetectable = Untransmittable
HIV cannot be sexually transmitted by people with undetectable viral loads.
Help end the HIV epidemic:
-
Get tested for HIV once a year, whether you think you’ve been exposed or not. It can take ten years to show symptoms.
If you’ve been exposed to HIV in the last 72 hours, you can take PEP to protect yourself.
-
If you’re at risk of HIV, or your partner does not like to use condoms, talk to your doctor about PrEP. You do not need your partner’s permission to go on PrEP.
-
Stay in treatment if you’ve tested positive so your viral load can become or remain undetectable—you’ll stay healthy, and you won’t sexually transmit HIV.
ACT UP meets Mondays from 7-9 PM at The Center 208 West 13th Street NYC actupny.com @actupny
